Annie Duke recently published a book on what she calls quit/grit trade-off decisions.
She incorporates a lot of references to behavioral economics studies, human stories to illustrate concepts and quotes of song lyrics and aphorisms which help drive her points home.
Overall I really enjoyed listening to this book and I felt that it will help me frame decision making differently going forward, namely:
– Find myself a quitting coach (or given the ones I already have permission to give that type of advice)
– Try to frame quit/grit decisions in expected value probability terms
My one criticism is that she ignores the “grass is always greener” syndrome that plagues many of us — an undercurrent of FOMO that keeps us from living fully in the moment and appreciating what we have while we have it.
On this point Moana’s dad has the quotable song lyrics: “You can find happiness right where you are”.
