Color Ranges: Another use for percentile rankings!

Sometimes I see how other people do things and I think, “that’s so obvious, why didn’t I think of that?”.

Yesterday I had one of those moments when I saw that instead of re-centering the color range you can ensure your Viz uses the entire color palette by creating a measure for percentile rank of the base measure you are using for color by.

Use percentile rank for color when:
– You want to ensure a spread in colors regardless of how the view is filtered

Use data center setting when:
– There is a clear inflection point in your data with a specific meaning you want to audience to easily interpret (eg Pass/Fail). OR
– Its more important to view outlier datapoints than see a rich array of colors
