Financial Times: Visual Vocabulary Iterations

A while back I found a pdf version of the Financial Times Visual Vocabulary — an explanatory guide to when and why to choose various chart types for communication.

It inspired me to started my own version of the Visual Vocabulary as an exercise in creating all sorts of different charts on Tableau Public over the summer.

Then I found Zen Master Andy Kriebel’s incredible version with millions of views on Tableau Public and lost interest in developing mine.

Later I was trying to learn Power BI and I found yet another example of the Visual Vocabulary done by SQL Jason.

Its incredible to me that you can download the entire Power BI or Tableau workbook with data included and reverse engineer each detail. I love that this graphical summary by FT has evolved, influenced and informed so many people.

I wonder how long before this will be built into a full online tutorial or a printed book — or maybe it has, but my random stumbling around the internet and LinkedIn hasn’t pointed me to that iteration yet.
