What is easier to teach? Domain knowledge or Data Science?

Does it make more sense to teach statistical methods to domain experts or domain knowledge to your data scientist?

For all the growth in the data science field I don’t think the problem solving approaches from dedicated data science and statistics programs have been fully integrated into the training programs for other fields of study.

There are some notable exceptions like Biostatistics, but a lot of what I’ve seen in consulting seems like the blind leading the blind, where neither the key stakeholders nor the consultants could make their projects successful on their own.

I’m sure the answer to my question is that both parties with specialized knowledge should seek to learn from and collaborate with each other, but it still seems like one direction or that other would be on average easier to move in.

My own learning path has been a sandwich approach of Econometrics to Business/pricing to Data Science, but I’m more of a generalist by nature
