“Think Big, Start Small, Scale Fast” Eric Reis

Automate This by Christopher Stiener

I’ve been struggling with the concept of Innovation lately.

In 2012 I read Christopher Steiner’s book Automate This and my climbing partner that summer was the first person I ever knew getting a PhD in Machine Learning.

In that year I went from never having heard of Python as anything but a type of snake to seeing applications for machine learning algos EVERYWHERE.

What captivated me most about the book was how it showed the power of certain algos to optimize within existing systems, based on data from the past, but the limited application for those same algos be able to handle and help us interpret true innovation and novelty.

One example was predicting if a new movie would be a financial success. The risk of releasing a sequel to a blockbuster is relatively low, even if they are rarely liked as well as the original.

I read the Pricing Model Revolution recently and a few years back Monetizing Innovation and Hitmakers and now the layers of individually well conceived thinking are producing an only opaque jumble of thoughts.

Where are the current blindspots when it comes to how we can best apply AI for risk mitigation, versioning and true iconoclastic innovation?

I may need to reread some selections of each of this books to fully gell my thoughts, but for now it’s bending towards this:

– Much of the pricing analysis I see today assumes persistent pricing structure from historical data into the future

– to change pricing models we may have new IoT or more granular data, but we’re still figuring out how to use it and what learnings are applicable across industries

– New Product introductions and startup pricing is inherently different (harder?) than versioning and the later stages of product lifecycle management
