recently bought a replica of this statue on Etsy. The name of the piece is “Self-made man” and it’s fairly new from a sculpture in Mexico

There is a tradition of people creating themselves from stone, but I like the idea of the person within the larger body for our era of excessive consumption, life hacks and short cuts.
Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and especially endurance sports post college (rowing, gravel cycling and triathlons).
I find that I’m anything from self-made. Teammates from rowing and broomball were instrumental to accomplishing my goals this summer. My rock climbing partner was a daily help with everything from childcare, to house projects, to finding and prioritizing fun like a 30 mile canoe trip with my 3yo.
A former rower introduced me to a data scientist I am likely to be able to collaborate with professionally.
One of my colleagues at Action Analytics came out to SF early and we got out climbing along the ocean which gave me more appreciation for the place I’d been living for 18months, too absorbed in work to fully appreciate.
I can’t imagine life without the deepening of relationships and support of other athletes.
I am so thankful I trained for triathlons and marathons and so how I was able to complete events many feel take super-human abilities, but I now know they just take consistency and dedication.
It’s so empowering to know that there is an inner person you can shape and let the rest of the world see.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped me through a challenging summer — my successes and happiness are anything but self made, they are framed and supported by so many others.
